Legion and Glenflesk out in front in

-

UNSURPRISINGLY given the volume of them there is here it’s two East Kerry clubs that lead the way early on as Legion and Glenflesk are the sides with 100% starts after two rounds.

Legion’s victory away to Kenmare didn’t quite match the high scoring nature of their opening day win over Spa but they will be happy to have recorded a 1-8 to 1-4 win. The Killarney side led by 0-5 to 0-2 but did appear to be in a bit of bother when the hosts got their goal with 15 minutes of proceedings left. Jack O’Neill eased their nerves by fisting to the net after two earlier missed goal chances as Chris Davies and Finbarr Murphy were others to impress in a four-point win for the Direen outfit.

Glenflesk had a more high scoring win over Listowel Emmets however, the East Kerry side finding the back of the net four times, Gavin Kelly getting three of those, in a 4-7 to 1-13 success. Kelly scored his first inside the opening 10 minutes as the East Kerry side led by 1-6 to 0-4 at half-time but most of the drama was to come in the second period. Jeff O’Donoghue scored a fortuitous second goal for the hosts in the 38th minute and when Kelly scored his second four minutes later, the game appeared over at 3-7 to 0-6.

Then came a run of 1-7 without reply for the visitors to turn the game on its head. Noel Kennelly scored the goal, Conor Cox scored four points, David Sheehy a brace along with a Maurice Whelan point to incredibly level matters. Dara Roche set up Kelly for the hat-trick however as James McCarrick gathered a late ‘Hail Mary’ by Listowel for the hosts in ensuring a see-saw win.

Another two East Kerry sides in Spa and Kilcummin got their first wins at the weekend, Spa having 10 points to spare over Listry at home with Kilcummin nine point winners away to St Pats in Blennerville. Michael McCarthy and Shane Cronin scored first half goals for Spa in giving them a 2-8 to 0-7 interval lead over their fellow East Kerry side as Liam Kennedy nearly goaled for the visitors. Anthony Kennedy did manage to score a goal for Listry in the second period but it only proved to be a consolation one
