Play-off date with Laois for Kerry hurlers

- Tommy O’Connor

IN round 5 of the Allianz hurling league, Division 1B last Sunday, Kerry went down by two points, 2-16 to 1-21 to Offaly after quite an entertaining contest.

The crucial difference between the sides was the fact that Kerry had a player sent off just before half time and the toll of having to play the entire second half with just 14 players proved just too much.

Although Kerry Offaly and Laois all finished on two points, the Faithful county had a better scoring average which gave them a place in the quarter finals of the league against Tipperary.

This result against Offaly on Sunday last unfortunately means that Kerry must now face a relegation play off where they will meet Laois once again. Under the rules of the competition, Laois will have home advantage because they have only played two home matches thus far in the league whereas Kerry have played three – the reverse of the situation last year when Kerry had home advantage in a similar situation.

The game will go ahead at Portlaoise on Saturday at 7pm. Kerry have had the measure of Laois in recent time winning the Round 1 games played both last year and this year and also getting the better of the midlanders in the relegation play-off last year.
