Fitzmaurice proud as punch as team overcome obstacles
WHILE he was giving very little away in terms of emotion, it was hard not to feel that a sense of pride was running through Eamonn Fitzmaurice at the extraordinary performance a new crop of Pobalscoil Corcha Dhuibhne players had produced in winning the school its third All-Ireland title.
“I’m very proud of how the players played. It was the story of our year in being poor in the first-half before coming good later on in the game.
“We had intended to try and do a bit better in the first period today, but we weren’t panicking at half-time despite the chances Maghera had left after them because we knew the spirit in the group would shine through in the end,” the Pobalscoil boss said.
Fitzmaurice agreed that Dylan Ó Géibheannaigh’s goal in the second period was crucial for his side in keeping their heads up and with some players as young as 14 in their line-up, he felt it reflected even more significantly on their win.
“It does show you the talent that is here and how they can perform on an occasion like this. I think they delay in the competition (due to the Tralee CBS and Colaiste Chriost Rí saga in the Corn Uí Mhuirí) suited us because it allowed us a lot of time to prepare and gather momentum over the last few weeks.
“It was a very even competition and there was very little in a lot of the games we have played to get here.”
