Paschal fire greets first light at Dawn Mass
HUNDREDS of people gathered for the Dawn Mass on Easter Sunday in Annagh graveyard in what turned out to be a beautiful morning.
The atmosphere was special for everyone in attendance with many describing it as a huge source of spiritual comfort. The Easter Paschal fire provided a magnificent sight as the enchanting singing combined with the dawn chorus, and the stunning backdrop of the Sliabh Mish mountains and sea to add an overwhelming sense of grandeur to the ceremony.
The congregation marvelled at the high numbers present and all agreed it was an event that had enhanced their faith with much fervour and joy.
Fr Francis Nolan said the congregation was following in the footsteps of St Brendan and “all our ancestors laid to rest in Annagh graveyard.” He added that this “holy ground invited people to be nurtured by the healing atmosphere around them.”
Fr Nolan said for centuries the Church of Christ had been a great force for good, but that mistakes were also made for which “we are truly sorry”. The congregation then prayed that people would find peace and forgiveness from whatever they have experienced and take Christ’s resurrection as a call to move in a spirit of hope.
After the Mass a much-needed breakfast was enjoyed by everyone and Fr Nolan on behalf of Curraheen Church Liturgy Group - thanked those who had attended and helped organise the event, adding: “We feel this has been an amazingly worthwhile experience and it was a wonderful community event. There is still a great spiritual hunger in people.”
