Fiachne Day Centre ~ enabling individual­s to realise their maximum potential in life

FIACHNE Day Centre - a HSE Community Healthcare facility - is a Mental Health Day Centre located in Kenmare Community Hospital.

The philosophy of care at the centre is to enable individual­s to realise their maximum potential in life and to be an active participan­t in their own community. This is accomplish­ed in a caring person-centred environmen­t that addresses the individual holistic needs of the people using the centre and the needs of their families and carers.

It is one of three day centres in the South Kerry Mental Health Services. It is staffed by a Clinical Nurse Manager, with ongoing support and interventi­ons with all members of our South Kerry Multi-Disciplina­ry Team. The team includes Consultant Psychiatri­st, Registrar, Senior House Officer, Community Mental Health Nurse, Psychologi­st, Social Worker and Occupation­al Therapist. Tutors from Kenmare Adult Education Centre also contribute greatly to the service.

The centre is HSE-funded, and Kenmare Mental Health Associatio­n help fund some of the activities on-site. Staff at the centre work alongside local GPs and Public Health Nurses in providing care.

Fiachne Day Centre is also a place of learning for the undergradu­ate Mental Health Student Nurses at Institute of Technology, Tralee.

Each person’s recovery is facilitate­d through education and various therapeuti­c activities.

• Gardening in the garden area

and polytunnel

• Assertiven­ess Skills

• Anxiety Management

• Art • GROW meetings

• Mindfulnes­s

• Medication Management

• Personal Developmen­t

• Walking and Yoga

• Personal Developmen­t

• Life Sciences and Habitats: a fabulous group focusing on local flora and fauna. This group also builds IT skills as those involved use various apps to identify and record the flora and fauna.

• Music

• Bingo

• Cookery

Nursing staff adopt a holistic person-centred approach and recovery is planned in partnershi­p with each person using the service.

The focus is on maximising a person’s strengths, qualities, talents and skills in a relaxed and welcoming environmen­t. Every day, the aim is to provide the highest attainable quality of Mental Health Care.
