Dr Rose Crushell’s contribution to Kenmare CNU is invaluable

-

DR Rose Crushell has given a lifetime’s service to the dream of a community hospital in Kenmare. She has worked there for over 40 years and the service she has provided for the hospital and the community can’t be stressed enough times.

There is also a wonderful sense of continuity to Dr Crushell’s work at Kenmare CNU as her daughter, Dr Hilda Crushell, now works alongside Rose to ensure patients receive the best in medical care.

Women like Dr Rose Crushell and retired matron, Mary Fitzgerald, never gave up on the dream of one day securing a new hospital for Kenmare. The dream was fulfilled in the summer of 2013 and this legacy is held in high regard by everyone associated with the hospital today.

Dr Rose Crushell is known as a ‘forward-thinking and hugely committed person’ and is described as someone ahead of her time. She was a frim advocate of ‘stepdown’ units and believed Kenmare should have a community hospital - as opposed to long stay units - way before the concept was popular.

Kenmare CNU is very grateful to have a medical officer of the calibre of Dr Rose Crushell, who still attends residents daily from Monday to Friday.

“I can’t stress enough the importance of Dr Rose in the context of Kenmare CNU,” said Director of Nursing, Margaret O’Sullivan.

“She has been instrumental and strived for decades to ensure we got the new hospital for Kenmare. Retired matron Mary Fitzgerald was equally instrumental in her efforts to secure a new hospital – a campaign that was ongoing since 1976. Dr Crushell’s philosophy has always been to get patients back home and back living. She was ahead of her time in everything she did.”
