The Kerryman (South Kerry Edition)
JOE GETS TO GRIPS WITH LEAGUE CUP!
THE scribe, in company with Joe Lynch of Coromore, travelled to the Kerry v Dublin League Final via train from Killarney which left at about 7.40 on Sunday morning. It was a pleasure to meet on the journey with the Cremin family from Shrone in Rathmore
Siobhán Cremin (originally of Brosna) was accompanied by five of her six children, who were dressed in Kerry colours.
What a joyful and memorable occasion the match proved to be. Joe and the scribe took our place in the middle of the Lower Deck of the Hogan Stand and met with Mick Fitzpatrick of Ballinskelligs, a former prominent forward and free taker with St Michaels-Foilmore. He is the son of Paddy Fitzpatrick of Ballinskelligs
Sadly, Paddy’s wife Kathleen passed away a few months ago. Mick Fitzpatrick is now a Portlaoise-domiciled teacher.
For quite some time now a man with a green blazer and silver hair regularly appears on television as he stands in the cup presentation section of Croke Park. For those who often wondered as to who he is, his name is Johnny Crosbie from Edenderry in Offaly. He oversees the safekeeping of the relevant cup to be presented on a given match day. Prior to the match Johnny afforded Joe Lynch an opportunity to hold the cup for a photo. So the question could be posed: Who is the Kerryman who held the National League Cup in his hands before Kerry captain Fionn Fitzgerald did so at the League final of 2017. Answer: Joe Lynch!
Aidan Walsh of Knightstown came to national prominence at the match when the TV cameras honed in on him twice
The Green Jacket is a most prestigious item of clothing , annually presented to the winner of the US Golf Masters – Sergio Garcia on this occasion. Aidan, wearing a green jacket, very prominent on the televised airwaves nationally, for a few moments in time, stole Garcia’s thunder.
The train journey home to Killarney from Heuston Station at 7.05 on Sunday evening was full of jovial and ebullient Kerry supporters.
A journey to be savoured. On the journey were the sisters Eileen and Ann Curra formerly of Chapeltown, Ann’s daughter Angela O’Leary as well as the former Renard-Foilmore and St Mary footballer, Joe Joe ‘Gabha’ O’Sullivan, accompanied by his son, journalist and GAA historian Brian O’Sullivan.
