Three routes across south Kerry but they’re all for one cause

WHEN it comes to scenic cycling routes few places can equal the beauty of south Kerry where everything is in gear for this Sunday (April 30) when the ‘Tour of South Kerry’ gets underway at 10am from Sive Boat House, Cahersivee­n.

The cycle features three routes of 50km, 70km and 100km offering plenty of scope for riders of various ability and fitness levels. The tour is a fundraiser for the Sive Rowing Club who will be providing food for the weary, but contented, cyclists at the Boat House after the event. At 6.30pm that evening a special wreath laying ceremony take places at the Grave of Mick ‘Iron Man’ Murphy to remember his eventful life.

At 8.30pm a special gathering at The Corner House (Keating’s Bar) will pay tribute to some special people who have given their all to sport over many years. These include: Joe Joe O Sullivan, Lurcan Murphy, Christy Riordan, Seamus Clifford, Irene Mc Carty, Dan Tim O Sullivan, and former Rás Star, Anthony O Halloran.

Special guests for this event are former World Hill Running Champion, John Linehan; Double Olympian Rower, Paul Griffin; Sub Four Miler, Frank Conway, and former Irish Champion Cyclist, Pat Healy.

The day is billed as one that celebrates sport and its many stars. Tribute songs will also be sung by Sean Garvey, Tony Horgan and Bridget Brennan.

Enrolment fee for the cycle is €20 and registrati­on is from 9am.
