‘LOOKING AFTER NUMBER ONE’

OVER 250 TEENAGERS ATTEND GLENFLESK GAA EVENT ON POSITIVE MENTAL HEALTH

- By STEPHEN FERNANE

GLENFLESK GAA Club can feel rightly proud of itself after staging a hugely successful ‘Looking after Me’ event attended by over 250 teenagers and adults at The Torc Hotel in Lissivigeen.

It all focused on promoting positive mental attitudes and the strengths and abilities of young people to be able to cope with the obstacles life sometimes puts in the way – the message was that we can all meet everyday challenges head on when we adopt a more positive attitude.

Kerry minor supremo, David Clifford, was on board to launch the event and Cork GAA star Briege Corkery spoke about her life’s journey – its ups and downs. Irish international footballer, David Saunders spoke about the resilience within all of us and added that if we share a problem it helps to lessen its impact.

Other contributors included dietician Maria Browne who offered helpful hints about the requirements of nutrition and the role it has in overall personal wellbeing. Jimmy Mulligan and the team at Jigsaw Kerry spoke about positivity saying their door is always opened to young people.

Glenflesk GAA Club Chairman Derry Healy was rightly proud of this ‘first of its kind’ event.

“We needed to get the message out to as many young people as possible. This was the start of a journey and more people now need to consider similar events,” said Derry.

“It was a light-hearted occasion and even though the deeper message was about mental positivity, it was a veiled one. If the evening managed to make a difference to just one person, then it’s a success. Everyone has concerns and difficulties but sometimes we think our troubles are not serious enough to look for help or support. The message is that there is always help and a way of sharing problems,” he added.
