Kerry camogie team strike for glory with win

CAMOGIE U-18 STRIKE FOR GLORY FINAL Kerry 5-21 Wicklow 1-7

THE Kerry Minor Camogie girls were crowned All Ireland Champions on Saturday after winning the U-18 Strike for Glory national competition in Nenagh on Saturday with a comprehensive 26-point victory over Wicklow.

Kerry started the brighter and had 0-7 on the scoreboard before Wicklow would register their first point. Rachel McCarthy slotting over the first point for Kerry. Great team work proved to be winning factor on the day with Norette Casey, Clodagh Walsh, Caoimhe Shanahan, Aoife O’Connor and Alannah Whelan all adding scores to leave the half-time score Kerry 3-12 Wicklow 0-3.

Wicklow got the first score of the second half a point from play but with the Kerry backs Eilish Harrington, Rachel Burke, Emma, Mairead and Ciara Canty in goals pulled of some great saves Kerry remained in total control.

Kerry responded with two points before Wicklow added a point from a free. Rachel McCarthy who was outstanding all day covering every inch of the pitch added three points in a row before Wicklow would score again.

All the subs were introduced throughout the second half adding a good input into the game. The Kerry captain Aoife O’Connor had the last say with a hand passed goal. Game over to the delight of the Kerry girls, management and supporters.

This is a fantastic achievement by these girls and the first All-Ireland Minor title for Kerry Camogie. Thanks to their trainers and mentors Owen Lawlor, Joe Walsh, Teresa Reil O’Connor and Fiona Lawlor who have worked with this team for the last number of years.
