Lynch and Quirke crowned All-Ireland Over-35 Doubles handball champions

- HANDBALL

GLENBEIGH pair Dominic Lynch and John Joe Quirke are celebrating another All Ireland title as the pair were crowned All Ireland Over 35s Doubles champions in Cavan at the weekend.

They defeated Gavin Buggy and Barry McWilliams 21-4, 21-8 in a final that was not as straight forward as the score suggests.

Lynch is only just back from injury well ahead of the time he was told he would be out. “I suffered a hand muscle injury a few weeks ago and was told I would be out for a few months. However after intensive physio I was fit to play as no player wants to miss out on an All Ireland decider,” he said. “I was very cautious in the early stages but thankfully John Joe was in great form and we won the first game 21-3. However at 6-3 up in the second game he injured his ankle on the base of the wall, tearing ligaments. However he would not quit and I must say there is no stronger a player out there than John Joe and certainly the adrenalin kicked in and we saw out the game 21-8.

“John Joe had to go to A&E to get his ankle strapped but as he said sure it’s worth it to win another All Ireland title, his 9th.

This is my 26th and second this year which makes it another great year for me and we will probably take a break now from the hard ball season. But we will decide that later. For now we will celebrate this title as they are getting harder to win.”
