JUNIOR PREMIER CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP 2017 SECOND ROUND VENUE : PÁIRC AN PHIARSAIGH DATE: SUNDAY 23RD APRIL 2017 RESULT : PIARSAIGH NA DROMODA 1.16 FOSSA 1.15 Good conditions, home advantage and great all round team performance made for a win by the narrowest of margins for P na D in the second round of Junior Premier Club Championship last Sunday afternoon in Páirc an Phiarsaigh when the Pearses met Fossa for the second time in three weeks. Dromid set out in their stall in the first quarter with stylish points from play by Tomás Ó Curráin, Niall Ó Sé and Dilan Ó Donnachadha. Fossa forward Paudie Clifford started the scoring for the visitors and this was to be their only point from play in the first half. Dromid’s defence was solid with Padraig J Ó Súilleabháin playing a great sweeper’s role and Graham Ó Súilleabháin keeping Kerry minor captain David Clifford scoreless in the first half. Good work up front gave Gearoid J Ó Súilleabháin Dromid’s only goal of the match and gave the Pearses a substantial lead. The half time score was Dromid 1.11 to Fossa’s 0.05. John Evans’ charges had to completely change tack if they were to catch up on their opposition and a goal and a point within three minutes brought them right back in sight of the hosts. They also had additional goal opportunities in the first quarter but goalkeeper Brian Ó Laoire saved a penalty and whatever else was fired in his direction. Fossa’s mid-field combo of Matthew Rennie and captain Mark Dennehy were getting the upper hand but equally man of the match Niall Ó Sé continued to be a thorn in Fossa’s side and he picked away with points from play together with points from frees from the Dromid captain Críostóir Ó Faircheallaigh. Fossa continued to narrow the deficit and it looked very much like a draw and extra time was going to be on the cards. As we advanced into injury time, tensions were running very high both on and off the field but the earlier introduction of Dromid’s seasoned players, Aodháin Ó Conchubhair and Aodháin Ó Súilleabhain was very timely on the part of Declan Ó Súilleabháin and his selectors and this was key to holding on to their lead. It was an admirable claw back of scores by Fossa but the better team held on to their lead and were deserved winners. The final score was Piarsaigh na Dromoda 1.16 to Fossa 1.15. The game was refereed by Clounmacon’s Patrick Sheehy who very controversially allowed over eight minutes of injury time. The Dromid team and supporters can now look forward to the semi-final in this championship.
