Junior leagues head for final stage

- Aine Ní Shúilleabháin

THE East Kerry Junior league is nearing the finals stage, with round 2 played last week.

In Division 1, it was the home side, Dr Crokes took the league points when they played Gneeveguilla. Dr Crokes built an unassailable lead in the first half, notching up 2-13 to 0-4. Dr Crokes continued to dominate the second half and ran out winners on a final scoreline of Dr Crokes 4-20 Gneeveguilla 0-10.

In the second division 1 game, Rathmore proved much too strong and experienced for a young Legion side, missing a number or regulars in this game played in Direen. Starting brightly enough with points on the scoreboard, the home side seemed to be well in contention.

However, Rathmore settled to their task and gradually began to open up a gap. The half-time score saw the sides go in with Rathmore leading 1-8 to 0-3. On resumption, Rathmore increased their lead and had a comfortable winning margin. Adam Moynihan’s well taken penalty was a bright spot for Legion. Final score Rathmore 3-17 Killarney Legion 1-8.

These results mean that Rathmore top the Division 1 league table, with four league points, while both Dr Crokes and Gneeveguilla are on two league points going into the final round of league games. Dr Crokes play Legion and Rathmore meet Gneeveguilla in round 3.

In Division 2, visitors Spa booked their place in the final when they travelled to Kilcummin for a round 2 game, having drawn in their round 1 game against Glenflesk. After an evenly contested first half, Spa lead by 1-8 to Kilcummin s 1-7 at the break, the goal scorers being John Falvey for Spa and Gearóid Kerins for Kilcummin.

The second half saw Spa in complete control and out score Kilcummin by twelve points to three with John Falvey accounting for 1-10 in total. Final score Spa 1-20 Kilcummin 1-10.

Spa await the outcome of the round 3 game between Glenflesk and Kilcummin to find out who they will meet in the final. Kilcummin need to win while a draw would suffice to see Glenflesk through to the final. Both Division 1 and Division 2 finals are fixed for Tuesday, May 2 at neutral venues.

Go Games Blitzes

KERRY Coaching and Games organised county blitz days in John Mitchels during the week.

The games were played in great spirit with all teams performing well over the two days. East Kerry/ Kenmare clubs were well represented with Kenmare, Glenflesk, Kilcummin and Listry enjoying the experience.

Thanks to Gary Vaughan (Spa), Ryan Kelliher (Spa), Dara Fleming (Glenflesk) and Sean O’Sullivan (Listry) for refereeing the matches. Jamie O’Sullivan (Gneeveguilla) provided great support to all clubs over the two days.

East Kerry/ Kenmare club Under 8 Go Games will be starting on the week of May 1. The host club must contact all clubs taking part in their games. Clubs may select any night that suits them to run the event over three weeks. It is vital that the Club books their own field with the Club Committee.

Coaching Officers have received a list of St Brendans College students to support them to referee the games. The result of the matches is not important players getting match practice and enjoying the experience is the main aim.
