The Kerryman (South Kerry Edition)
KCYMS make Kerry history by winning Billy Kelly Tournament
THE KCYMS U-17 boys won the prestigious Billy Kelly tournament in Cork recently, beating Moycullen of Galway in the final to become the first Kerry team to win this event.
The tournament is the equivalent of U-17 All-Ireland with all the best teams in the country participating, with KCYMS competing against Waterford, UCD Marian, Ballincollig and Carrig na bhFear in the group stage.
The Kerry club beat Waterford 56-35 in the first game and Carrig na bhFear 58-20 in the second and took care of UCD Marian 62-35 to set up a showdown with Ballincollig to top the group. This was the toughest group game for KCYMS but they made it four wins from four on a 44-33 winning scoreline.
Topping the group set up a quarter-final against Templeogue from Dublin, a team that had won the U-16 All-Ireland the previous year. KCYMS came out of the blocks on fire scoring from all areas and playing some great defence and won 64-34.
In the semi-final the Kerry boys accounted for local Cork side Blue Demons. The first half was a close affair but KCYMS eventually pulled away enough to win 59-45 and set up a final showdown with Moycullen. This game was score for score the whole way through with only few points at any stage separating them.
KCYMS looked like they were in control until the last minute when Moycullen hit two three-pointers to go two points up with 10 seconds to go. KCYMS had an inbound ball which they put up for Eoin Sullivan to catch and tip in to level the game. On the inbound ball KCYMS stole the pass, got fouled and David McCarthy make one of his free throws for KCYMS to sneak the win 53-52.
KCYMS: Liam Croke, Eoin Sullivan, Eoin Evans, Roan Moriarty, Ewan Weldon, David McCarthy, Sean Hogan, Linus Burke, Ronan Fitzpatrick, Tim Moskal.
Tournament MVP was Eoin O’Sullivan.
