Flags, food and fireworks for July 4 fest
IF you can’t be in the States on July 4, then there’s no need to fret because Killarney will have the occasion covered.
As has been the case for each of the last three years, Killarney will celebrate the great American date with its 4th of July Festival from 7am to midnight, promising an exciting parade, barbecue, live music, street performances and more.
Organising committee member Ollie Favier said the festival is an opportunity to mark the links between the United States and the Kerry town.
“We have a long-standing and positive relationship with the US, as so many Irish people have been welcomed into the land of opportunity and laid foundations there” he said.
“And how can we forget that America has introduced us to things like American Football, French Fries and Friends! What better way to acknowledge all of this than to celebrate with them on their Independence Day.”
Celebrations begin at 7am with a dawn chorus of “The Star-Spangled Banner” by The Shire Male Choir, and a ceremonial hoisting of the US flag over the Town Hall. Ollie explained that this is always an emotional affair, with American visitors joining Irish revellers in waving flags and singing the anthem with pride.
“The celebrations will see downtown Killarney transformed into Main Street USA, coming alive with street entertainment throughout the day from the likes of The Wild West Troupe, Brass bands and can-can girls,” he said.
“There’ll also be a chance for nostalgic film buffs to watch the classic
“Back to the Future in Killarney House on the day, And no July 4 would be complete without the spectacular fireworks display at 11.30pm.
“This will be the biggest celebration of America’s Independence outside of America itself. We want to show our American visitors how truly appreciative we are of them and also give a nod to our loved ones over in America celebrating the day. This is of course a celebration of all things American so wear your colours, bring your flags and join us on July 4.”
