Taoiseach full of praise for hitech ‘Kerryman’
June 1992
TAOISEACH Albert Reynolds this week praised The Kerryman for investing £400.000 in new technology which, he said, would underpin the future of jobs in the company.
Officially opening ‘The Kerryman’’s fully computerised editorial offices, Mr Reynolds said the investment was a testament to the company’s progressive and forward looking attitude to the development of newspaper production.
“This is an investment which underpins the future of jobs here in Tralee and enhances ‘The Kerryman’s capacity to bring out better, brighter and more colourful newspapers,” Mr Reynolds told 500 guests who celebrated the commissioning of the new computer system on Monday.
The new system is the most technologically advanced newspaper production system in this country.
It allows journalists to write stories and assemble pages including text, photographs, advertisements and logos - entirely on screen.
The Taoiseach was welcomed by Independent Newspapers Chief Executive Liam Healy, Independent Managing Director Denis J Hayes, Kerryman Managing Director Bryan Cunningham and Editor Brian Looney.
Mr Hayes said the new technology was an investment in the future which would allow the company to meet the challenges of a tough, competitive business.
A reception to celebrate the commissioning of the new technology was also attended by the Labour Party Leader Dick Spring, Kerry County Council Chairman Tom McEllistrim, Playwright John B Keane and Kerry Group’s Managing Director, Denis Brosnan.
Also present on the day were the Sunday Independent Editor Aengus Fanning, originally from Tralee, Cork Examiner Ted Crosbie and the former Kerry footballers Eoin ‘Bomber’ Listen and Ogie Moran.
