The Kerryman (South Kerry Edition)

My oh my, just where did that year go?

-

CAN it really be that long since the last Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle?

It seems like I’ve only just got back out the road, yet we’re already on the final countdown to Kerry’s showcase cycling – and charity – event.

This year I’ve been cycling mad but getting nowhere. Took up spinning back in February and waited – and waited some more – until the fair weather hit before getting back out on the road.

The spinning has definitely helped, the hills don’t seem too taxing and I’ve even been able to enjoy the views over the Reeks late into the evenings. I’m worried, though, about lack of saddle time on the big day but sure that’s all part of the pain.

Finally took the bike to work this week and tried the Short Mountain past Scotia’s Grave. Reached the summit alright but it’s a long drag up there. Hopefully it’ll stand to me on the big day and that final approach up Moll’s Gap.

Thankfully the weather has turned a corner and it’s quite simply a joy to be out enjoying the Kerry scenery. But, sadly, there has been tragedy on our roads in recent weeks too and it puts in sharp focus the need to stay alert at all times.

The final touches are being made to this year’s cycle, safety plans and road closures will be published next week and all that’ll be left will be the tea, barmbrack and sandwiches.

It truly is a wonderful spectacle with around 10,000 cyclists taking to the roads. And if you haven’t signed up yet, well there’s still time as some of the charities have a few spaces left.

The Kerryman is proud to be media sponsors of such an impressive undertaking and in this supplement we feature each of the 10 nominated charities who will benefit from this year’s event, all equally deserving causes and all in huge need of your continued support. So please give generously and maybe this year the total could reach the impressive €1.7m raised from last year’s edition.

Indeed, from humble beginnings the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle has raised over €10m for charity. Long may it continue and here’s to a great day!
