Division 6 camogie crown for Cillard

-

A BUSY weekend for two the Kerry camogie clubs at the John West Féile na nGael 2017 which took place in Kilkenny last weekend.

County Feile winners Causeway and runners-up Cillard represented Kerry which was a huge honour for these two clubs. Although while we had only one club bringing back an All-Ireland title to the kingdom on Sunday evening beaten quarter-finalists Causeway can be very proud of themselves as they done very well to get this far.

CILLARD

CILLARD secured back-to-back titles this weekend when they won the John West Féile Na Gael 2017 Division 6 All Ireland Championship.

Carrickshock GAA and Camogie Club in Hugginstown was host to Cillard where they travelled to on Friday evening to a huge welcome reception by the host club. Round 1 of Group B kicked off to a great start for the Team when they defeated Wexford’s Geraldine O’Hanrahans on a score of 3-2 to 0-0.

Donard The Glen from County Wicklow was the second match in the round and the Club was to prove itself no match for the Mighty Cillard with the full-time score of 2-5 to 0-1

On Saturday morning Cillard faced their host club Carrickshock who put up a great battle and the scores were hard fought with the result of Cillard topping the group 1-7 to 0-1 and heading for the Cup quarter-final in Carlow town hurling club.

Despite the heat and humidity, the girls were gallant in their battle to move forward and finished with a massive win over Burren Rangers 8-7 to 1-0 with every member of the team contributing to them moving on to the semi-final.

Cillard made a 7am start on Sunday where they headed over to Carlow and faced into the semi-final against Marshalstown-Castledockrell of Wexford and the girls from Cillard proved once again that the Kerry camogie team was above and beyond their competitors and won the semi-final in St. Aidans club in Ferns when the ref finally blew the whistle after 19 minutes of play in the second half Cillard 4-10 Wexford 2-2

With the Cillard banner raised high they travelled the short distance to Ferns GAA Centre of Excellence where both the hurling and camogie finals were to be played out.

Their Mentors Joe Walsh and John Sheehan did a fantastic job of getting the girls into form for what was to be a lovely spectacle of camogie between Rower Inistiogue of Kilkenny.

The two best teams of the division rose to the occasion and at half time the score was 2-1 to 0-1 and the valiant Cillard side went on to retain their lead in the second half to finish 3-2 to 0-4.

All members of the team contributed to this outstanding result this weekend.

The club would like to thank and acknowledge the commitment from the players and note that there were many young players on the panel travelling to Feile for the first time.

There was great excitement and celebrations when Captain Amy O’Sullivan, Kilflynn lifted the Cup, Amy was euphoric after completing the famous double having secured the title in The Feile Skills competition in Abbotstown the previous week.

CAUSEWAY

CAUSEWAY, Kerry Feile Winners were in Division 5 and based in Kilmacow, Kilkenny for the weekend.

Losing their first game to Rathgarogue-Cushinstown, Wexford they went on to win their next two games against Kiltegan and Kilmacow which saw them into the cup quarter-final on Saturday evening.

Leading at half-time by one point unfortunately Brideoga, Mayo put in a strong second half to win by two points.

Brideoga went on to win out the final against Rathgarogue-Cushinstown.

The girls can take heart from a great team performance on and off the pitch. They are a young team and with only four of the girls overage for next year know that their turn will come.

Thanks to Kilmacow Camogie Club for being fantastic hosts, the girls, mentors and parents had a brilliant weekend.

Thanks to everyone who helped make this weekend possible for this amazing bunch of girls.
