The Kerryman (South Kerry Edition)
Kenmare and Tralee through to Mixed Foursomes area final
KENMARE and Tralee will meet in the West Munster Area final of the Irish Mixed foursomes after a weekend of action at Kanturk and Ring of Kerry.
Beginning at Kanturk, Newcastlewest dismissed Ballybunion (3-2) in the only match of round one.
In round two there were wins for Newcastlewest over Kanturk (4-1), Killorglin over Ballyheigue (4-1), Tralee over Castleisland (4-1) and Doneraile over Castlegregory (4-1).
Round three saw Killorglin beat Newcastlewest (4-1) while Tralee beat Doneraile (3.5 to 1.5) and in the afternoon final Tralee beat Killorglin (4-1) to qualify.
Down south at Ring of Kerry, walkovers were the order of the day as Killarney received one from Berehaven in the only round one fixture.
In round two Kenmare received a walkover from Ross as did Glengarriff from Waterville and Dooks from Ceann Sibeal and now to those who did bother to play in the only actual match of round two Killarney beat Ring of Kerry (4-1).
In round three Killarney beat Dooks by three and a half to one and a half and Kenmare beat Glengarriff by the same margin with Kenmare then going on to beat Killarney (3-2) in the final.
Kenmare will now play Tralee at Killarney’s Killeen course on Thursday, June 29 at 4.30pm and the winners will go through to the Munster semi-final at Monkstown on August 5.
I must go back and mention the walkovers again as they are a particular “bugbear” of mine.
I repeat what I wrote before, clubs should not enter events knowing that the likelihood is that they won’t be able to field a team and there are habitual offenders.
Yes, by all means, something at the last minute can prevent a team from playing but four walkovers in one day at one venue?
This happens all the time and like I said, there are habitual offenders but the authorities won’t do anything about it so these clubs will continue to do it year after year.
