KILLARNEY’S DAY ON THE LAKE

IT’S one of the showcase events in the rowing calendar and the large crowd that turned up at Mahony’s Point on Sunday certainly upheld this view. Six teams from the Killarney area took to the water, from U16s to Veteran level, in ideal weather conditions. Spectators witnessed some amazing racing and close finishes - all of which ensured the success of Killarney’s 232nd annual regatta.

Muckross and Flesk Valley shared the majority of wins but it was a richly competitive year with Workmen, Fossa, St Brendan’s and Commercials also finishing the day with wins in various races. Moreover, Commercials’ win in the Novice Sixes was their first taste of success since 1980.

The best race of the day was the Senior Fours with Muckross and Fossa locked in a tight finish that needed to go to video evidence on Tuesday night to try and establish a winner. It was that close.

“There was a good distribution of races this year and while Muckross have been dominant for a number of years, it was gratifying to see clubs like Ste Brendans, Commercials, Fossa and Flesk Valley winning races. Flesk Valley were really the story of this year’s regatta,” said John Kelly, PRO of Killarney Regatta.

John welcomed the competitive edge to this year’s event as it encourages rowers to stay focused after months of training. It also bodes well for the future of rowing in Killarney. John thanked Killarney Golf & Fishing Club for the excellent facilities and to the many firms who provided generous sponsorship. The members of the Civil Defence were also present during the day.
