Legion stay top despite being held to a draw in Beaufort

-

DIVISION TWO

ALTHOUGH they dropped their first point of the campaign, Killarney Legion remain on top of the table after an 0-11 points apiece draw away to Beaufort that saw them having led by 0-8 to 0-2 at half-time. Jamie O’Sullivan scored six of Legion’s first half points as it took Beaufort 16 minutes to get their first score through Ronan Murphy.

Darragh Coffey scored their second but the game changed in the second period when Liam Carey managed to get his first score of the game. A combination of Fergal Hallissey and Ciaran Kennedy drew the sides level before O’Sullivan appeared to have given Legion the win with 12 minutes left.

However, after a long period without a score Kevin Ferris secured an equaliser for the hosts in a game that ended on a slightly sour note with both Padraig Doona from Beaufort and Legion’s Chris Davies sent off near the end.

Spa stayed second, meanwhile, as they got the better of Waterville by 2-14 to 1-8 at the South Kerry venue. The home side looked like going in front at the break leading by 0-5 to 0-4 but a 27th minute goal from Jamie Spillane meant Spa led by 1-6 to 0-5 at half-time. Jamie O’Sullivan and Alan O’Shea levelled the game up for the hosts after the break however with a goal and a point respectively but eight unanswered points put Spa back in charge. Evan (four) and Cormac (three) Cronin made up the bulk of these scores as Evan Cronin scored a late penalty in Spa’s nine point win.

Glenflesk are third in the table after edging out St Pats Blennerville by two points that leaves the St Brendan’s District side in the relegation battle. Padraig Healy impressed at midfield for the East Kerry side as they led by two at the break. David O’Callaghan kept St Pats in the shake-up but with five minutes to go Jeff O’Donoghue was fouled going through on goal and Darragh Roche converted the penalty for a personal total of 1-7 and a 1-13 to 0-14 win as the three East Kerry sides occupy the promotion spots at present.

Elsewhere, Currow moved up to fifth in the table with a win over Kilcummin at home that saw them hit 12 consecutive points in the second-half to overturn a 2-5 to 0-5 lead at half-time. The hosts had led by 0-4 to 0-1 early on but Kilcummin hit a bit of a purple patch in Donal Maher and Ian Devane scoring the goals that put them six in front at the break.

Daniel O’Shea (eight points), John Buckley and Mike McCarthy turned the game in the hosts favour with their run of 12 scores as the visitors didn’t score again until the three-quarter mark. The final scoreline was 0-18 to 2-7 in Currow’s favour as Kilcummin find themselves looking over their shoulders now somewhat.

Listry and Listowel Emmets will be played on Sunday, July 30 while the Kenmare Shamrocks versus Ardfert game was not played because of the County Hurling Championship. The St Brendans side’s next game in the League will be on Wednesday, July 19 as they travel to Kilcummin for a game both sides will be anxious for points from.

Kenmare return to action against Waterville while Listowel Emmets will be at home as well to St Pats in Frank Sheehy Park.

Legion return to Direen to take on Currow while there are two big derbies in Spa and Glenflesk facing off as they occupy second and third in the table while Beaufort and Listry is a game that will have implications at both ends of the table.
