Castlemaine claim first silverware
DENNY DIVISION 2 LEAGUE FINAL Castlemaine United B 2 Annascaul Inch United 0
BOTH of these sides were bidding for their very first piece of silverware and it was Castlemaine that showed the greater appetite for the game and after a tremendous second half performance they came out on top in a very competitive game.
Exchanges were even enough in a relatively tame first half but Castlemaine put the foot on the gas in the second half and ran out deserving winners at the end.
There was a great atmosphere at the game with a big crowd urging on both sides.
The first decent scoring chance came to Castlemaine when a Wayne Coffey corner found Cathal Moriarty but his header was well held by Alan Falvey.
Annascaul/Inch then put a good attack together which yielded a corner and Luke Doran’s corner was taken off the line by Stephen O’Carroll.
Then the Annascaul/Inch keeper was called into action and he made a good save to deny Daniel O’Connor.
Annascaul/Inch lost one of their most influential players before half time when Greg Ashe was forced to retire injured and he was replaced by Shane Foley.
The second half got off to an explosive start with Castlemaine going ahead in the 47th minute.
Kieran O’Carroll sent an accurately measured over the top ball towards Wayne Coffey and he used his speed and fancy footwork to get past a defender and the Castlemaine goalie but he was forced by defenders and done superbly to steer the ball to the net from a tight angle.
Castlemaine had a couple of chances to add to their tally but they were unable to find the net.
However they put the game to bed five minutes later when Cathal Moriarty was taken down in the box by Paul Whelehan and Cathal Moriarty buried the penalty kick.
