The Kerryman (South Kerry Edition)
Horses offer many therapeutic and educational benefits ...
OFTEN overlooked is a horse’s ability to assist in various educational and therapeutic roles that help children overcome many obstacles in life. For example, Hippotherapy is a form of occupational therapy that uses equine movement to enhance physical and neurological coordination which is achieved through the horse’s movement. The horse’s stride, gait and cadence form a collective rhythm that helps children develop their physical strength. Horse riding also increases cognitive awareness, posture, sensory awareness, and overall stimulation. Children with certain behavioural issues also benefit from horse riding as the calm tempo and trotting style of a horse is deemed highly therapeutic.
Luckily, Kerry is awash with equine centres where kids get an opportunity to experience the joys of horse riding. You might also think by enrolling a child in a riding school that it’s simply about the thrill of riding; however, it also teaches children (and adults) about responsibility, welfare and empathy towards animals. Horses require an all-inclusive approach and working with them from a young age helps instil a sense of multi-tasking. This is especially satisfying for kids living in urban areas who wouldn’t normally get a chance to ride a horse.
Even among adults, horse riding is a great way to improve your core muscle group, improve flexibility, improve mental wellness and coordination. Moreover, according to a recent UK health study, just one hour’s horse riding can burn up to 650 calories. Another good reason if ever there was one!
Nothing is better than to see the world behind the ears of a horse !
