Gold for King in hammer and Diego in triple jump

A HANDFUL of Kerry athletes took to Tullamore Harriers Stadium last Saturday for the Irish Life Health National Junior and U-23 Track and Field Championsh­ips.

In the U-23 category, there were gold medals for Adam King (Iveragh) in the men’s hammer with a throw of just over 63m and Solange Diego (Tralee Harriers) in the women’s triple jump.

Rossa Foley (Farranfore Maine Valley) won bronze in weight for distance.

Aoibheann O’Brien from Tralee Harriers was the only junior medal winner, picking up silver in the women’s long jump.

LAST Sunday was the turn of our master athletes to prove that age is just a number, when they took to the track and field in Tullamore for the Irish Life Health Masters Championsh­ips.

There were four medals for Patsy O’Connor (Tralee Harriers) when he won gold in the M60 shot, javelin, discus and weight for distance. Club mate Martin Flaherty won silver in the M50 hammer.

Sheila O’Donoghue (Gneeveguil­la) was also a multiple gold medal winner, taking first place in W50 discus, shot and hammer. Team mates Eileen O’Riordan won gold in the W45 discus and silver in the hammer and Robert Purcell was 3rd in M45 5,000m.

An Riocht’s star performers didn’t disappoint with Jer O’Donoghue taking gold in the M35 100m and 200m.

There was double gold for Ger Cremin in M35 110m hurdles and 400m and their men’s 4 x 100m relay team crossed the line in first place. Niamh O’Sullivan was just pipped on the line for silver in the W55 3,000m race.

Competing for Farranfore Maine Valley were Jim O’Shea who won gold in the high jump and long jump and silver in the 100m. Maria silver won silver in the W40 3,000m and Sean O’Shea picked up bronze medals in the discus and weight for distance and silver in the shot for the M35-49 category. Kevin Lynch (Lios Tuathail) won the M40 400m and was second in the 200m.

There was also a silver medal for Kenmare’s David Littlejohn in the M35-49 javelin. Representi­ng Iveragh were Colm Lynch, 3rd in O35 200m, silver in 400m and Patrick O’Shea silver in M65 5000m. Ursula Barrett (St Brendan’s) won bronze in the W40 100m. In the M50+ high jump 3rd place went to Patrick O’Riordan and we was also 2nd in the M60+ long jump. ATHLONE IT was the setting on Sunday for the Irish Life Health Juvenile Inter Club Relay Championsh­ips where there was bronze for the Tralee Harriers U-17 boy’s team of Cathal Fitzgibbon, Mervyn Shalemba, Cillian Griffin and Luke O’Carroll.

KERRY Athletics hosted the Kerry Primary School Sports last Wednesday at the newly refurbishe­d track in Castleisla­nd. The event was very well supported and ran off quickly and was a great success. There were some close finals and the future of athletics in the county is very bright.
