Boxers in action nationally and on the European stage
AARON McElligott has been included in the National Schoolboy squad to represent Ireland at the European Schoolboy Boxing Championships in Valcea, Romania from July 17 to 26.
The Kilflynn native has achieved several boxing successes during the past two years, including a National Boy 2 title in 2016, and he is rated one of Ireland’s best boxers in his weight division.
Aaron is the son of former Crotta hurler Tom McElligott and Lisa McElligott (nee Prendergast) from Ballyduff. He is trained by Patrick O’Brien at the Cashen Vale Boxing Club in the Irish Collage Ballybunion.
It’s five years since a former Cashen Vale boxer Brian Wall from Ballybunion achieved that historic silver medal win at the European Junior Championships in Bulgaria.
Meanwhile, Jonathon McCarthy (44kg) will box in the Cadets Championship final on Friday, July 28 in the National Stadium Dublin.
His cousin Patrick (48kg) the reigning Irish champion, could be along side him as he boxes this coming Friday in the semi-finals.
The Cadets are the pick of Ireland and only the winner and runner-up of each province takes part so no easy bouts here. Both McCarthy boys are training hard for these titles since they won their Munster titles in March this year, Jonathon will box O’Rourke from Co. Donegal a lad he beat in quarter-final of the nationals, while Patrick boxed and beat Sean Ruth from Marble City BC.
Next up for Patrick is Fiontan Loughlin (St Pauls). Hopefully both boys will do the business and bring home two more National titles which will add to what has been a very successful year for Tralee Boxing Club.
