The Kerryman (South Kerry Edition)
Lios Tuathail AC retain Club title
DAY 2 of the Kerry County Championship took place at An Riocht last Saturday. The weather was kind until just before the relays, but the drizzle didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of our young athletes.
Lios Tuathail came out well on top of the club table for the second year running with over 200 points, which must be some sort of record! Kenmare were second and Tralee Harriers third.
There were also several Championship Best Performances set on day 1 of the championships, with day two to be confirmed – Gary Randles U-16 boys javelin with a throw of 32.70m, Katelyn Reid (An Riocht) U-15 girls javelin with a throw of 37.78m, Conor Crean (Tralee Harriers) U-12 boys turbo javelin with a throw of 21.69m, Cillian Griffin (Tralee Harriers) who ran the U-16 boys 250mH in 33.57 seconds and the 100m in 11.73 seconds.

Katelyn Reid (An Riocht) won silver in the U-15 girls javelin and Fiona Doyle (Star of the Laune) picked up bronze in the U-17 girl’s high jump.
Competing well, but finishing just outside the medals were Gary Randles (Kenmare), 4th in the U-16 boy’s shot, Darragh Courtney (St Brendan’s) 4th in U-17 boys hurdles, Leanne Cronin (Farranfore Maine Valley) 5th in U-18 girl’s shot, Jack Greaney (Gneeveguilla) 5th in U-15 boy’s triple jump and Aaron Malik (St Brendan’s) 5th in U-17 boy’s 300m hurdles.
SIOFRA Foley (Farranfore Maine Valley) was the only Kerry medal winner at the Irish Life Health B Championships last Saturday, winning gold in the U-16 girls shot competition.
Also competing on Saturday were Shona O’Brien (Gneeveguilla) and Ciara Kennelly (Killarney Valley) who took part in the Schools International Track and Field Championships in Dublin. Both finished outside of the medals but were part of the Irish team who finished in second place overall.
SHONA Heaslip, one of Kerry’s and Ireland’s rising stars in the field of athletics, has been selected for the 2017 World University Games which will be hosted by the city of Taipei in Taiwan from August 19 – 30. Kerry Athletics wish her all the best at this prestigious event.
