Major progress with treatment plant
ON the afternoon of Thursday, July 13, officials of Kerry County Council and Irish Water and representatives from the EPS company came together for a function in the Royal Hotel prior to the unveiling of a plaque of Valentia Slate to mark the upgrading of the Wastewater Treatment Plant situated in Peter St, Knightstown.
The plaque was unveiled by the KCC Cathaoirleach John Sheahan. In attendance also were Moira Morrel (CEO of KCC), John Kennelly (Senior Engineer, KCC), John Sugrue (Civil Engineer), Dermot O’Connor (Plant Technician), Joe O’Brien and Jim Kavanagh (Engineering Reps. from EPS), Joe Kennedy (Head Engineer of Irish Water Infrastructure) and Antoinette Tyrell (Irish Water Press Officer). Michael Egan, Chairman of Knightstown Tidy Towns Committee spoke.
Irish Water’s investment in Knightstown’s Wastewater Treatment Plant is intended to protect the environment and support sustainable economic growth
Knightstown will benefit from cleaner bathing waters and a healthier coastal environment as a result of the completion of the €250,000 investment by Irish Water. This upgrade will also support future population growth and sustainable economic development in the village.
Prior to carrying out the work, wastewater produced in Knightstown only received primary treatment in a septic tank before being discharged into the sea. As a result of the project’s completion, all wastewater is now fully treated.
The new plant also has a larger capacity, enabling it to cater for the permanent population of Knightstown as well as the large number of tourists in the summer period.
