VALENTIA TALK

On Friday 21st July at St John the Baptist Church Knightstown at 8:00 pm our Valentia friends will host a talk by Arnold Horner on "Alexander Nimmo and the Development of Knightstown in the early 19th Century. Admission will be free with a retiring collection for the continuing restoration of the Church. Ample free parking is available at Cracow Park opposite the church.

Arnold has given a number of most interesting talks in Iveragh from time to time, and we have no doubt that this talk will give great insights into the history of Valentia. He is also the producer of the fine editions of the 1811 and 1812 Nimmo Bog Maps of Iveragh and the Kenmare River, along with extracts from and commentary on the associated reports by Nimmo to the Bog Commissioners. These lovely coloured maps, which are very decorative as well as informative, are still available in Iveragh outlets.

LIME KILNS/WATER PUMPS

Heritage Iveragh is cooperating in a countywide initiative to identify the location of lime kilns and public water pumps or taps. Regarding the Lime Kilns, we are aware from a previous project where a number of these are, or were, located in the Iveragh Peninsula e.g. Aghatubrid; Emlaghnamuc; Dungeagan; Scart; Shanacashel; Lickeens. Further information on these would be welcome. Information about the location and history of any others in the Iveragh area or elsewhere would be very welcome.

The public water pumps were generally the cast-iron type with a handle at the side, but we are also interested in the location of water taps of any type provided for public use.
