National figureheads visit Killarney Rotary
THE Killarney Rotary Club was in celebratory mood this week as they welcomed some of the association’s hierarchy down for lunch at Gaby’s Restaurant.
Rotary Ireland District Governor Garth Arnold and Assistant Governor Conny Ovesen joined the Killarney club last Wednesday, and had plenty praise and advice for Killarney and clubs of their kind.
In his address, Mr Arnold spoke about the Rotary’s increasing membership and cited how satellite clubs can boost membership among young people.
Killarney Rotary’s new President Eduard SchmidtZorner took the opportunity of the major occasion to highlight Killarney Rotary Club’s support of over 30 charities and projects in recent years, as well as its strong connection with Killarney’s youth through involvement with the Youth Leadership Competition and its Young Musician of the Year contest.
Mr Schmidt-Zorner, who assumed the Killarney Rotary presidency just a few weeks ago, also informed the club’s guests of Killarney Rotary Club’s imminent plans.
“The club also organises mock interviews for secondary school students and hosts a number of exciting social and charity events throughout the year,” Mr Schmidt-Zorner added, “and one of our main events is the Evening of Wine and Art in November, which is supported by a large number of people in our community.
“We also have an afternoon tea session that accompanies a fashion show in October, and that seems to attract more and more visitors every year.
“I’m also very much looking forward to having a ‘Haibun’ literary competition next year which will involve the students of schools in Killarney, Milltown and Killorglin.”
