Ardfert Harvest Cycle continues to grow

- By FERGUS DENNEHY

NEVER a village to rest on its laurels, the excitement is once again building in Ardfert this week as cyclists prepare to take part in the fourth annual year of the Ardfert Harvest Cycle.

The event, which is set to take place on September 9, will see the cyclists given the choice of tackling two different leisure routes of either 32km or 70km in length.

An exciting change of route is planned for this year’s cycle with both routes starting at Ardfert National School and will head past Liscahane towards Tralee, turn left onto Bracker O’ Regan Rd. Moving towards Abbeydorney, riders will face their first test with a climb up Listellick, both routes will continue together until they reach Ballincloher Cross where the shorter route will turn off to Lerrig Cross and back to Ardfert.

The 70km route will continue on past Ballincloher Cross into Ballyduff and onto the North Road where riders will face their Alpe d’Huez up the magnificent Kerryhead, but once they reach the top, the views they will encounter on the descent into Ballyheigue will literally take their breath away.

No doubt, much to the delight of the cyclists, there will be a BBQ, raffle and music afterwards, with all proceeds from this going into the Ardfert school hall building fund.

It starts at 10am on September 9. Helmets are compulsory and the cycle will cost €25 for adults while registration for U16’s will cost €15; registration will take place in Ardfert National School on Friday 8th September from 6 – 8pm and on Saturday morning before the race 8.30 – 9.45am.

In a new addition to this year’s cycle, there will be kids fun cycle held on Sunday September 10 at 12pm where children too young to take part in the fun of the previous day have the option of a 5km/10km cycle. The childrens cycle will cost €10 with registration taking place from 11 – 11.45am on Sunday 10th September. For more info call Anita on 087 3936698.
