6 reasons to reseed

-

WE are all told how the advantages of reseeding far outweigh the costs but it is important to remind ourselves what exactly these are. There are 6 key reasons for reseeding pastures in the spring, summer or autumn:

1. More grass at crucial times of the year – new perennial ryegrass reseeds will deliver 4 times more grass in spring and autumn versus old permanent pastures

2. More responsive to chemical N – perennial ryegrass swards are 25% more responsive to chemical Nitrogen than non-perennial ryegrass swards

3. More regrowth potential – reseeded swards with higher perennial ryegrass content are quicker out of the traps for regrowth versus older permanent pastures

4. More DMD + more Energy – new reseeds with higher perennial ryegrass contents have higher DMD (Digestibilty), higher dNDF (Digestible Fibre), higher ME (Metabolisable Energy) and lower NDF (Fibre) versus older permanent pastures

5. More tonnes per hectare – new reseeds will produce more tonnes (+3-5tn DM/ha/year) and so more energy per hectare versus older permanent pastures and this will support higher stocking rates on farms

6. More grazing’s – new reseeds with higher perennial ryegrass content will give more grazing’s (10 versus 6) per year meaning less supplementation, less time inside and more profit to farmers
