PLAYED in ideal conditions in Con Keating Park on a beautiful Friday evening we were witnessed to a very scrappy semi-final.

Skellig Rangers led six to three at half time and were also guilty of squander mania considering they totally dominated the half. Wing-back Brendan Murphy got proceedings under way for Rangers with a cracker from wing back.

Diarmuid Keating was on fire from placed balls landing three 45s and two frees treating us to an exhibition of free kicking from the ground. Waterville’s replies came from wing-back Cillian Clifford and veteran full-forward Seamus O Sullivan also contributed two beauties from play.

The second half commenced with a brief improvement from Waterville but unfortunately for them by the 42nd minute the score read 0-10 to 0-5 in favour of Skellig Rangers. Outstanding attacking defenders Alan O’Dwyer and Fionan Clifford added two massive scores from play for Waterville.

Diarmuid Keating and Brian Murphy from frees and Brian Hickey and Brendan O’Sullivan scored from play for Skellig Rangers. Waterville now hit a purple patch young Jamie O Sullivan (a fine prospect) from play, Barry O Dwyer from two frees and lionhearted defender Alan O’Dwyer and the best player on the field Fionan Clifford kicked two great scores again from play to tie up the game at 10 apiece.

Both sides had chances to forge ahead, Rangers in particular, but up stepped old reliable Brian Hickey to hit his second from play and the winner for Skellig Rangers.

We await the outcome of the other semifinal between St Marys and Dromid and then we will await the CCC to find a date to finish the competition not easy considering the packed fixture calendar that exists. Referee was Peter Lyons.
