Legion maintain their 100% record as they march straight back to the top division

-

DIVISION TWO

LIKE Division 3, the promotion race was decided in advance, the only question was whether Legion would secure the title outright, something they managed to do with 13 points to spare over Glenflesk at the Community Field in Barradubh on Sunday afternoon.

4-18 to 2-11 was the Direen side’s winning margin as they could reflect on an unbeaten league campaign that saw them only drop points against Beaufort, Currow and Ardfert. They return to the top flight instantly as any outside chance of either Beaufort or Spa forcing a playoff for the title ended with Legion’s win.

Spa lost out to Kilcummin in any event with the latter grateful for the win in preventing them from being relegated for the second consecutive year. John Falvey and Dan O’Donoghue had scored first-half goals for the hosts in giving them a 2-7 to 0-12 lead over Kilcummin with Evan Cronin scoring six of Spa’s points in total on the day.

Matt Keane, Kelvin Teahan, Daniel O’Leary and Brendan Kealy had impressed for Kilcummin in the first period as their greater need of the result told true in the second-half.

They forced Spa goalkeeper James Devane into some fine saves, but the game looked like ending in a draw when Conor Stack put over a monster effort for the hosts. Noel Duggan got the insurance points for Kilcummin however in a 0-23 to 2-15 win as they just finished ahead of Waterville in the table on nine points.

This result, coupled with a 1-18to1-10winforListowel Emmets over Ardfert relegated the South Kerry side for the second time in three years as Waterville’s 2-10 to 0-13 win over Listry mattered little in the overall scheme of things.

Both Emmets and Ardfert finished on nine points in the table with the result of their game. St Pats / Blennerville were also officially relegated as a result of the Kilcummin and Waterville results and they went down with a small bit of a chastising 9-16 to 2-13 loss to Kenmare Shamrocks.

Beaufort vs. Currow was not played and is due to be played on Sunday September 24 with the Mid Kerry side having a chance to finish second outright in the table ahead of Spa.

Currow, meanwhile, will be delighted to have stayed up and remained in the same division in the League for a second year for the first time since 2012! Waterville head down to Division 3 for the first time since 2011 meanwhile.
