KILLARNEY LEGION

DIVISION 2 COUNTY LEAGUE CHAMPIONS: Congrats to our Senior men who,by virtue of a 4-18 to 2-11 win over Glenflesk, were crowned Division 2 County League champions. To go through the whole campaign unbeaten, with 8 wins and 3 draws, sealed an emphatic return to the top division and it’s one the players and management team can take great pride in.With the unavailability of our intercounty contingent it afforded others the opportunity to step up to the mark in what can be a very tough division. This sets up the lads nicely for the remainder of the year and the O Donoghue Cup which commences in the Autumn. Well done to team and management!!

SENIOR LADIES SUCCESS: Well done to our Senior ladies who captured their Junior Championship with a fantastic win over a very competitive Cromane team.Cromane struck for early first half goals to build up a lead but our girls ,through some great point taking, nudged ahead at half time. Killarney Legion 0-12 Cromane 2-4 Cromane again started the second half strong and ran into a 3 point lead again before we took over in the last quarter with Denise Lyne and Elizabeth Mohan stealing in for goals.By full time we had ran out 6 point winners on a score of 3-14 to 3-08. Captain Denise Lyne was presented with the trophy at full time and huge credit is due to the girls and management team of John Doona and Susanne Smith. This Championship win builds nicely on last year’s league triumph and bodes well for the future of ladies football in the club. A nice early return too for our generous team sponsors Rentokil Initial.

LEGION U12 GIRLS Our U12 girls opened up their East Kerry campaign with a humdinger of a win over Laune Rangers last week in Direen. In what was a very even game scoring was at a premium which was a tribute to both defences who put in a huge effort.A bit more of a cutting edge on our forward division proved the difference. Further points for Mike Frank Russell (free) and Shane Daly saw Rangers go into the break with a commanding lead. Half Time Score:- Annascaul 0-3, Laune Rangers 2-6. Laune Rangers were excellent in the second half, as the full back line of Neil O’Brien, Ronan Sayers & especially Johnny Carey were defiant in stopping any attacking opportunity. Points from David Costello (2), John Tyther & Francis Russell saw the visitors leading by 2-10 to 0-3 with a quarter to play. Annascaul added points from Genie Farrell (free) and David Clifford, before points were traded between Shane McSweeney & Jason Hickson. John Tyther and David Costelloe added points before Costelloe netted his second and Rangers’ third goal of the game. Hickson and Farrell (free) kicked the final scores of the game for the hosts. Full Time Score:- Annascaul 0-8, Laune Rangers 3-13. Annascaul:- Tommy Pierce, Joe Hoare, Gearoid O’Shea (0-1), Fintan Herlihy, David Clifford (0-1), Andrew Finn, Joe Kennedy, Emmett Kennedy, Niall McKenna, James Scanlon, Jason Hickson (0-4), Brian Kennedy, Alan Falvey, Max Kennedy, Genie Farrell (0-2). O’SULLIVAN CUP: For the first time in decades, a Laune Rangers =91A’ team competes in the Mid Kerry O’Sullivan Cup in 2017, with teams competing in County League Divisions Three, Four and Five allowed to play with an unrestricted team. Rangers travelled to Keel -- another unrestricted team -- in Round One of the competition on Tuesday evening and came away with the all important win. It was a family affair in the game with 5 sets of brothers on the field. Rangers had the Russell, Tyther and O’Shea brothers involved while Keel had the Cahillane brothers playing. However, the most interesting pairing was the Sayers duo of Gary and Ronan who lined out on opposite sides with Ronan given the job of marking big brother Gary. Keel got out of the blocks much better and were ahead by three points after 5 minutes, as Gary Sayers (3, 1f) & Thomas Ladden kicked well taken scores for the home side while Colm O’Shea got Rangers off the mark. Rangers grew into the game, and points from O’Shea brothers Cian and Colm (free) as well as an excellent left-footed Shane McSweeney effort levelled up the game. Terry O’Sullivan and Colm O’Shea traded points to see the sides all square at 0-5 a piece with a quarter played. Laune Rangers saw Peter Crowley don the royal blue jersey to come on as a substitute at full back for the injured Johnny Carey in the 16th minute. Gary Sayers & Aaron Murphy saw points cancelled out by two Colm O’Shea frees, while Daniel Macbeth and Keel’s Luke Flynn exchanged points also. However, Rangers got their noses in front before the break, as a great team move saw a Colm O’Shea feed David Costelloe who finished with ease to give the visitors the lead at the break. Another notable first half introduction saw Gavin O’Shea come on to join both of his brothers Colm & Cian on the field for the first time. Half Time Score:- Keel 0-8, Laune Rangers 1-8. Laune Rangers two goalkeepers saw equal game time, as Jason Browne was replaced by Tony Lyons at the intermission. The second half was a tighter affair and, having been introduced for his brother Francis at the break, Mike Frank Russell took little time in getting on the score-board. Colm O’Shea added a free before both Rangers scores were cancelled out by Keel through Gary Sayers and Terry O’Sullivan. Francis Russell was re-introduced for Cian O’Shea to get on the field with Mike Frank for the first time, and took inspiration from big brother to score a neat point almost immediately.
