- SUSAN VICKERS An Taisce Coastal Programmes Officer – South West

IT’S that time of the year again – the Big Beach Clean weekend is just around the corner! This year the Big Beach Clean takes place from the 15th to the 17th of September.

The aim of the Big Beach Weekend is to clean as much of the coastline as possible over a short amount of time, and to capture data on the types and amounts of marine litter found on Ireland’s shores.

REGISTER FOR THE BIG BEACH CLEAN

All you have to do is fill out the form at cleancoasts.org/our-initiatives/big-beach-clean/#register and you’re ready to go.

Make sure to register as quickly as you can so you can get a free clean-up pack. If you have already registered, your clean-up kit will be on its way to you shortly. If the dates 15th - 17th September don’t work for you, please feel free to register a clean-up around those dates instead.

WHY JOIN A BIG BEACH CLEAN

Don’t have time to organise your own beach clean? Not to worry, you can join one of the beach cleans already registered, and more are being registered every day. Just get in touch with the Clean Coasts office and we’ll pass on your details to the group you’d like to join.

DON’T FORGET ABOUT THE DATA COLLECTION!

An important part of the Big Beach Clean is collecting data about the types of litter we are finding on Irish beaches so that we can tackle big issues like sewage related litter with new initiatives such as the ‘Think Before You Flush’ campaign. So please don’t forget to send us your data cards, which are included in your packs. You can also download a data card or fill out the survey online – just check out www.cleancoasts. org for details.

WHAT’S THE STORY MARINE LITTER

Approximately 10-12 million tonnes of litter ends up in the world’s oceans and seas each year, and approximately 15 per cent of this ends up on our shores. Alarmingly 80 per cent of marine litter originates from land-based activities.

If you have any questions about the Big Beach Clean or any other aspect of Clean Coasts don’t hesitate to get in touch.
