River Island card players come up trumps for good causes
FIVE charities received €1,000 each in the most recent round of donations from the River Island Hotel card players.
The funds are raised through the 31 game held every Sunday night at the hotel.
The recipient charities were: Bru Columbanus; Castleisland Day Care Centre; North Kerry Alzheimer’s; Kingdom Carers and Our Lady of the Angels.
In the case of the Castleisland Day Care Centre cheque, it was presented by Hannah Hickey. Hannah has been one of the River Island Hotel card players since it was founded in Skevenas Bar in 1994 and she is also a client of the day care centre.
The card school is running since September 1994 and was set up by host John O’Sullivan at Skevenas Bar as a fundraiser for the Castleisland Coursing Club. The club was about to buy and develop its own grounds just off the Black Road in Tullig at the time.
When that mission was accomplished and the bills paid they decided to keep the school going and turn their financial attentions to local charities.
Meanwhile, the following are the results of the card game held in The River Island Hotel on Sunday night last:
1st: Frank Moran and Liam Lane. 2Nd: Gabe O’Sullivan and Mairead Nolan, Ann Breen and Kathleen O’Shea, Siobhan Brosnan and Donie Cremins, Carmel Daly and Gerard Walsh, Danny Moriarty and Jim O’Sullivan. Ladies: Dolly McAulliffe and Norrie O’Connor.
Gents: Bill O’Sullivan and Mossie Walsh, Dick Collins and Neily Shanahan. Mixed: John and Margaret Whelehan.
Spots: Marie O’Connor and Dan McCarthy, MaryMcGaley and Johnny O’Connell, Bridie Guerin and Siobhan Kelliher.
