KCC will consult landowners on Killorglin footpath works

- By TADHG EVANS

KERRY County Council (KCC) will shortly commence consultation with landowners on the N72 – which connects Killorglin to Killarney – in respect of acquiring lands for a new footpath from Killorglin town to the old Liebeg Factory.

This was outlined in response to Fianna Fáil Councillor Michael Cahill, who said the need for a footpath adjacent to the road is urgent following KCC’s decision to approve planning permission for a major development by FEXCO on the site of the Liebig factory.

He said the development will “greatly increase the volume of traffic.”

“FEXCO will have 300 jobs at the old Liebig factory, creating 100 new high-tech jobs,” Councillor Cahill said.

“There is a very real urgency in respect to the provision of a footpath adjacent to the road out to the old Liebig factory, and I’m calling on Kerry County Council and Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) to expedite matters.”

Cllr Cahill went on to describe the road as “extremely dangerous.”

A spokesperson for Kerry

County Council explained that planning and design for pavement improvements, including the provision of footpath and cycleway facilities between

Killorglin and

Anglont, is underway.

“The scope of works and extent of land required is currently being assessed and discussed with Transport Infrastructure Ireland,” the response outlined.

“Consultation with the landowners and the public will also be carried out.”
