Cross country season is now fast approachin­g

WITH the cross-country season fast approachin­g training has begun in earnest across the county. This year the three Kerry fixtures will be held on consecutiv­e weekends to avoid clashing with Munster and national events.

First up, on Sunday, October 1, is the Juvenile Even Age, Novice and U23 Championsh­ips, which will be held, as always, in the Killarney Demesne opposite the cathedral. Hosted by Gneeveguil­la AC. Sunday, October 8 sees the action move to Currow, under the watchful eye of An Riocht AC, for the Juvenile Uneven Age, Intermedia­te and Masters Championsh­ips. Please note that U-9 athletes must be born in 2009 and entry will not to permitted for athletes born after this date.

Star of the Laune take on the final county event on Sunday, October 15 - the Juvenile Cross-country Relays, Senior and Junior Championsh­ips which will be held in Killorglin. All events start at 11am and an entry fee will be charged at the gate. Athletes must be a registered member of a Kerry club in order to enter any of these events. The very popular Kerry Athletics Developmen­t Squad training sessions return to the newly refurbishe­d An Riocht track in Castleisla­nd on Sunday, October 8 from 11am to 1pm. Last year saw 64 athletes attend this training, with many of them achieving medals at Munster and National level.

Leading coaches from all over Kerry come to advise and develop the athletes and help with technique and preparatio­n for competitio­n. Events range from sprinting, middle distance, high jump, long and triple jumps along with the very popular throwing events.

These sessions are open to all Kerry Athletic club athletes who will be U-13 in 2018 and older. There will 30+ session in total running from October right through to the end of the outdoor season in July 2018. The cost for the year is €50 per athlete.
