‘Successful TD’ to have INEC showing

-

BASED on ‘The Letters of A Successful TD’ and ‘An Irish Minister of State’ by Listowel’s by John B Keane and adapted by the director Michael Scott and cast Jon Kenny and Mary McEvoy, the play, ‘A Successful TD’ makes its debut in the INEC Killarney Saturday November 18.

The Successful TD follows the trials, tribulations, misadventures and hilarious antics of Till McAdoo as he seeks re-election to the Dáil in the “October Elections”.

Tull has roped in the help of his faithful daughter Kate while his wife nurses her various ailments in bed or in Lisdoonvarna, but his arch enemy Flannery the local school teacher plans to scupper the election for Tull…

“Any man with a vote is a man to be respected. I’ll play with them, lie to them, sing dumb about them while I have a chance of a vote. That’s my livelihood. Don’t give me no more stink about the truth. Christ told the truth and they crucified Him…” states a line from the play.

Written by John B Keane in 1967 he displays his edge for humor and satire that are uncomfortably close to the politics of today. Peppered with Keane’s gallery of madcap characters this show will have you laughing at politics (in a good way) from the start.

One half of the famous comic duo d’Unbelievables Jon Kenny has been threading the boards for decades. Since 2014 he has been playing the title role in John B Keane’s The Matchmaker, Bull McCabe in The Field for which he received rave reviews and also in Sive. In 2014 he played in She Stoops to Conquer at the Abbey Theatre.

Recognized by television viewers for having played the role of Biddy Byrne in Glenroe from 1983-2000 Mary McEvoy has had a very successful career in Theatre appearing in numerous plays, including several by John B Keane including Sive, The Field, The Chastitute, The Year of the Hiker and Moll as well as The Philanderer by George Bernard Shaw and Semi-Private by Mary Halpin at The Gate.

She starred with Siobhan McKenna in the original production of Bailegangaire and Wood of the Whispering with Druid Theatre.
