Arrest after knife drama on Cork to Tralee bus
PASSENGERS on a Bus Eireann service from Cork to Tralee were said to be traumatised after a man on the bus pulled out a knife and threatened another passenger.
The shocking incident unfolded on the 1.30pm Bus Eireann bus from Cork to Tralee on Friday.
Passengers on the bus reacted in horror when a man – aged in his 40s – produced a knife and threatened a passenger sitting near him. The knife wielding man then reportedly waved the blade around in what was described as “a generally threatening and abusive manner.”
The driver and a number of other passengers on the bus made contact with Gardaí who were waiting for the bus when it arrived at the Macroom Mills bus stop about 45 minutes after leaving Cork Bus Station.
When the Expressway bus stopped at Macroom the suspect immediately jumped off the bus and fled the scene.
He was chased by several gardaí who arrested him, a short distance from the bus station, shortly before 3pm on Friday.
The man – who is said to be well known to gardaí – was brought to Macroom Garda Station where he was detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.
He is due before the courts in relation to the incident in the coming days and Gardaí in Macroom are appealing to anyone who witnessed the incident to contact them.
A knife was recovered by investigating gardaí and enquiries are ongoing.
Though no one was injured in the incident Gardaí said that many of the passengers had been left “extremely traumatised and shaken” by what they had witnessed.
