Language planning in Tralee

- By TADHG EVANS

AN information meeting will take place in Tralee later this month to outline the language planning process for Gaeltacht Service Towns (GSTs).

It follows the announcement that Tralee can apply for recognition as a GST.

Foras na Gaeilge Programme Manager Gearóid Trimble explained that GSTs are located in or near Gaeltacht Language Planning Areas and can play an important role in the provision of local public services, as well as social and commercial facilities.

“A lead organisation or committee will be selected in each Service Town to undertake putting together a language plan for the town,” Mr Trimble said.

“An information meeting will be held for all committees, organisations and other interested parties operating in Tralee on Wednesday 25 October at 8pm in the Meadowlands Hotel to explain the language planning process outlined for the GSTs and the support and assistance that will be available.”

Representatives from Foras na Gaeilge, the Department of Heritage, Culture and the Gaeltacht and Údarás na Gaeltachta will be present on the night, and representatives of organisations and committees are asked to contact Foras na Gaeilge at cobaoill@forasnagaeilge.ie to confirm their attendance.

Further information on the Gaeltacht Act, GSTs, and language planning is available at www.chg.gov.ie.
