New Fishery Restaurant: where traditional and modern recipes meet

- By STEPHEN FERNANE

THE New Fishery Restaurant in Killorglin is new in every sense thanks to the inspiration and endeavour of its new proprietors, Dagmar and Günter Schwark.

The German couple took over the restaurant in May 2017 and have gradually rejuvenated its interior to make it a bright, spacious and attractive dining destination on the banks of the Laune River which also functions as a stylish café.

“It’s gone quite good and after our first season we’ve already received very good reviews on Trip Advisor, Google and Facebook. We’re very pleased with the comments from our customers as the new renovations have truly added a beautiful colour scheme that is warm and welcoming with brand new furnishings,” said Dagmar.

But the menu is also a top propriety at The New Fishery which comes as no surprise considering Günter is a World Class Master Chef – an award based on the recommendation of two other Master Chefs. Günter’s accolade is very much reflected in his menu which offers a tantalising range of fresh and locally sourced seafood such as seafood chowder, fresh salmon supreme, Calamari, salmon teriyaki, freshly made fish & chips – all prepared in house.

The restaurant also caters for non-fish eaters with quality free-range chicken, succulent steaks, Killorglin lamb, and traditional Sunday lunch. Dagmar and Günter also give customers a sample of delicious German and European cuisine, with such delights as lentil stew with smoked beef sausage and tasty, freshly made soups – all of which is but a sample of its extensive menu.

Experience is in plentiful supply at The New Fishery where Günter’s culinary skills make the perfect match for Dagmar’s lifetime experience. Back home in Germany, Dagmar’s parents ran a hotel and restaurant business for over 20 years, so she is in familiar territory when it comes to creating a friendly, customer-focused restaurant.

These are still early days for The New Fishery and while Dagmar and Günter couldn’t be more pleased with how their first 6 months have gone, they now want to spread the message that their stylish new restaurant now caters for over 80 people making it suitable for all kinds of private functions and parties - handy to know given the Christmas party season is almost upon us.

Dagmar added: “It’s an exciting time for us and the restaurant now looks very promising. We’re open daily from 11am to 5pm (except Monday). On Friday and Saturday night we’re open until 10pm for dinner, but if there is a group of more than 20 people, we’re more than happy to open other nights for private functions. We also have the capacity to cater for functions in the mornings as well as evenings, so people should contact us.”
