Foodshare Kerry

-

THIS innovative and enterprising local project is located in Tralee and is committed to the concept of salvaging quality surplus food from supermarkets and food producers and making it available to charities. It is up and running for almost 2 years and has already prevented 9 tonnes of food waste from reaching the landfill. It has distributed food to 22 charitable groups and over 3,000 people, while also supporting families.

In 2016 Foodshare was granted food under the European Aid for the Most Deprived (FEAD) which has enabled the project to vastly increase its distribution of food. Over the next couple of years Foodshare will be able to draw down thousands of euro worth of food for those in need.

The company’s mission received overwhelming support due to its ethical and logical premise of helping people. The staff and volunteers believe strongly in what they are doing which helps make the task an energetic and purposeful one.

Foodshare is the only food bank operating in Kerry which has brought together a coalition of stakeholders in order to achieve its twin objectives of reducing food waste and reducing food poverty. Foodshare believes that the dumping of surplus food is morally wrong and economically inefficient. Therefore, its core stance stems from a social, moral and economic perspective achieving the net result of helping people and to produce a healthier society and improved environment.
