Important café date for Kerry writers

- By STEPHEN FERNANE

MANY writers will often overlook some of the more nuanced aspects of their work, and to help in this regard a special Writers’ Café takes place at Killarney House on Saturday, October 14 from 11am to 1pm.

This event is organised in conjunction with Kerry County Council, Words Ireland and Listowel Writers’ Week and the topic under discussion is ‘Taxation for Writers’ where practical advice and guidelines about revenue, managing books, understanding taxation, Income Tax and the Artist Exemption will be dealt with.

The session will be delivered as an informal presentation with an opportunity for queries direct to an industry specialist. It will be delivered by Gaby Smyth - a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants and MD of ‘Gaby Smyth & Company Ltd’. Gaby will part with his 20 years of experience specialising in the literary, visual, music, film and theatre arts. He is also the chair of Jameson Dublin Film Festival.

“We are also grateful to the NPWS and for the use of Killarney House and also to the Board of Trustees of Muckross House for their ongoing support to the arts in Kerry,” said County Arts Officer Kate Kennelly.

Additional program content includes accounts, allowable trading expenditure, treatment of capital expenditure and filing for PRSI, USC and Artist Exemption. The café is free of charge but registration is essential online. See www.eventbrite.ie for more details.
