Man will ‘never own dog again’

A MAN who was found to have kept three dogs in poor condition - one with a collar so tight it was causing a ‘laceration’ to the dog’s neck – has undertaken never to own a dog again.

Gerard Enright, Dromerin, Listowel was prosecuted by Kerry County Council before Judge James O’Connor at Listowel District Court on Thursday under section 9 of the Control of Dogs Act 1986.

Solicitor for Kerry County Council James Morris informed the Court that a dog warden discovered three dogs in bad condition on Mr Enright’s property’

One of the dogs was running a high temperature, another was underweight and the third case cited in the courtroom was of a dog that was ‘lacerated’ by a tight collar as the result of being restrained by it for ‘long hours’.

Mr Morris was able to tell the court that Mr Enright had ‘volunteered’ that he would not keep a dog for the rest of his lifetime. This was confirmed by defence solicitor Pat Enright who said of his client: ‘He would be a man with a great interest in dogs and animals’; explaining that many animals came into his client’s ownership.

“One dog kept breaking away and kept breaking everye collar used to restrain him. This collar was put on too tight and that caused the problem,” Mr Enright explained.

He said that a lot of work had been required to resolve the matter via Thursday’s undertaking. After taking the stand and briefly remarking on his claim there was no identifying marks on the vet’s car on the day of the inpsection, Mr Enright gave the undertaking.

Asked if he was prepared to undertake not to keep a dog ever again, Mr Enright said: ‘Yes, yes, yes.’

Mr Morris meanwhile informed the court the three dogs are back ‘in the full of their health’. The case was put back until October 21 next.
