Castleisland have too much for Abbey

- Dan Kearney

WEST MUNSTER U-14 LEAGUE Castleisland 14 Abbeyfeale 0

CASTLEISLAND played old rivals Abbeyfeale on Saturday morning at the Crageens in the first league game of the season.

Castleisland were under intense pressure in the first half, but managed to score a breakaway try when Patrick Fitzgerald grounded under the posts following a good turnover in defence.

Donal Daly slotted over the conversion to leave the score at 7-0 at half-time. Castleisland scored their second try midway through the second half when Donal Daly touched down under the posts from a third phase ball and duly converted afterwards.

There were no further scores for the remainder of the game and Castleisland collected their first league points. Castleisland are away to Listowel on October 21 for the second round.

Corca Dhuibhne 42 Listowel 30

DAITHI Baker was unstoppable for Corca Dhuibhne and his six tries were a testament to his brilliant all round performance.

Cathal Galvin was equally brilliant from the boot and he converted all six tries in a superb display. Mikey Devine, Sean O’Connor and Luke O’Connor were also impressive for Corca Dhuibhne.

Listowel played some good attacking rugby in the first half and Eddie Carmody scored a good try. Listowel’s dynamic outhalf Conor Murphy scored an exciting individual try in the second half and his team-mate Danny Finch scored another after a good drive from Sean Thompson.

Oisin Kennelly then stepped up to score Listowel’s final two tries in what was a brilliant game of open attacking rugby.

Tralee 17 Killarney 41

KILLARNEY were too strong for Tralee in what was a brilliant team display.

Tralee did score tries from new centre Sam McElligott (2) and Gearoid Walsh but Killarney had too much firepower despite a fine display from Tralee’s Conor O’Dowd. Killarney didn’t want to name their players.

U-16 FRIENDLY Castleisland 15 Newcastle West 14

CASTLEISLAND went down 15 14 to Newcastle West on Friday night under lights in Castleisland.

The home team were 7-3 up at halftime with Tadhg O’Shea’s try converted by David Dillon. O’Shea scored his second try early in second half which was once more converted by Dillon to give home team 14-3 lead. Newcastle West struck for two late tries, one converted, which saw the away side take the win.

U-18 FRIENDLY South Kerry 24 Listowel 0

SOUTH Kerry scored two tries through Munster Under 18 Darragh Fitzgerald, with Richard Wallace and Sean Breandan Ó Beaglaoich scoring one apiece with Jamie O’Leary adding the conversions. It was an ideal game for both teams before the Munster U-18 league kicks off.

Representative Action

THE Munster Under 18 girls were crowned Interprovincial champions for 2017 with a 23-12 victory over Ulster in Barnhall last Saturday.

Munster had already defeated Connacht and Leinster in earlier rounds. Muirne Wall of Listowel RFC played at full back and touched down for a vital 10 minutes into the second half while Rebecca Reilly, also of Listowel RFC played a vital role coming into the second row off the bench. Lea Turner of Colaiste na Sceilge was also a member of the panel.

Currow native JJ Hanrahan started for Munster at full back in their disappointing 23-17 bonus point loss to Leinster in the Guinness Pro 14. Hanrahan was named at full back but moved to out half for the second half when Ian Keatley was replaced.

Munster’s performance in general was poor, with Keith Earls’ brace of tries being the most positive aspect of the game from a Munster point of view. The postmatch interview by Reggie Corrigan with Munster captain Peter O’Mahony was certainly a talking point, with O’Mahony taking umbrage with Corrigan’s line of questioning over Munster’s 100% commitment to the cause.

Munster teams have thrived on a ‘them against us’ type of thinking in the past, and hopefully it will once again be a defining factor when they take on Racing 92 in the first round of the European Champions Cup in Thomond Park next Saturday at 5.30.
