FATIMA CENTENARY

The sixth and final apparition of Our Lady at Fatima will be commemorated , in association with Youth 2000 , at a YOUTH MASS in the Church of the Holy Rosary Gneeveguilla on Fri October 13th at 7.30 pm, celebbrated by Fr. Jim Lenihan. Everyone is welcome .

GNEEVEGUILLA CHURCH

Canon J O’SulIivan was born in Kenmare in 1866, he was ordained on the 20th of June, 1886. He received a donation of money from his brother and put it towards the building of the much needed church in Gneeveguilla. In the presence of two thousand parishioners, Rev. Dr. O’Brien, Bishop of Kerry, opened, consecrated and dedicated the new church at 11 o’clock on the 10th of October, 1937. Having blessed the exterior first, the bishop on his way to the main entrance was met by the architect, Mr. Robinson who presented him with a gold key. With the key he opened the church and then consecrated the interior. It is dedicated to Our Lady of the Holy Rosary. The bishop then presided over solemn high mass which was concelebrated by over twenty priests. The choir was prepared by Sr. Assumpta, Rathmore and conducted by Mrs. O’Leary. Other singers were James Donnelly, Kitty O’Connor, Lizzie Linehan, Nora O’Rourke and her sister Kitty O’Leary. (The 80th Anniversary of the church will be celebrated at 10 am. Mass on Sunday October 15th 2017,Cllr Niall Kelleher is delighted to confirm that 20 houses will be built by Kerry County Council construction is due to commence in April 2018 and be ready for occupation in May 2019 and also €35k has been allocated for the upgrading of water mains in Gleann Rua.

FLOODING

At a recent Killarney Municipal District meeting, Cllr Maura Healy-Rae asked KCC to carry out further works on the Cullawa River as there is still some parts blocked with trees and this could potentially cause flooding in the winter months. She also explained that while good work was done, the silt and the gravel wasn’t removed and this must be done. KCC responded by saying "An assessment by the Municipal District Engineer and Biodiversity Officer will be carried out. If appropriate, an application for funding will be made available to the OPW”.

GNEEVEGUILLA AC

Kerry Minor’s: Now that the dust has settled over the Kerry Minor Footballer’s outstanding win over Derry last rennlity it is worth noting that three of the team were prominent members of Gneeveguilla Athletic Club. Patrick Warren from Scrahanaville was one of the top cross country runners for many years, taking many medals in his time. He was also an outstanding relay runner with the club. His sister Sinead is National Champion in The Discus & Hammer. His brother Shane is no bad athlete either, his mum Joan & dad Nealie are trojan workers in the club. Christopher O’ Donoghue from Clonkeen ran the first leg of our relay for many years and never left us down. He is son of Florrie, Kerry County Council & Marie of Rathmore Credit Union. Our third club member was the ever smiling Donal O’ Sullivan from Kilgarvan. Donal represented Kerry at The National Community Games finals on several occasions.Glory came to Donal & the u13 relay team in 2012 in Tullamore when the club won 5 in a row All Ireland National Titles. The team on that day were Cian McCarthy, Gary Cronin, Cathal Collins, Brian Murphy, Sean Doherty & Donal O’ Sullivan. Donal is son to mom Marie & dad Gabriel. We congratulate each of the lads and their families on a fantastic performance. The three lads were buzzing in Croke Park, easy to see the Athletics background in them.
