Scéim nan Imeachtaí Óige grant secured

-

VALENTIA Island Development Company in collaboration with Sorcha Ní Mhurchú, Rúnaí, Coiste Glórnan Gael Dairbhre, has secured funding in excess of €4,500 from Foras na Gaeilge to further promote the use of the Irish language in the community.

This is the second ‘Scéim na nImeachtaí Óige’ grant, which runs throughout the school year, that has been secured by the above collaboration to further encourage the use of spoken Irish outside of the education system.

For the second year running this programme will be carried out in the Halla Spóirt, Caol, on Thursday evenings from 3.30pm to 6pm with the sports team; Ursula Uí Shé, Séamus Ó Fáoláin agus Pádraig Ó Donnchú. Sorcha Ní Mhurchú will be present as Teagasóir Gaeilge whilst 3 different age groups (age 3-9 ) of primary school children participate in a variety of sports such as cispheil, haca, eitpheil, caid, sacar, lúthchleasaíocht, racaí sealaíochta, cluichí beaga agus araile through the medium of Irish. In addition Cearúilín Bean Uí Dhálaigh will also promote the use of the Irish language on Wednesday evenings from 8-9 during badminton practice for 10-15 year olds.

The sports team and Sports Hall Manager Ursula are unequivocally positive towards the use of the Irish language in the Sports Hall. Children from Valentia and Portmagee participate in these weekly sports programmes. It is wonderful that they also receive an opportunity to hear and use the Irish language that they have learned in school in their community. We are very appreciative of the Foras na Gaeilge grant. In addition to the promotion of the Irish language the grant covers the cost of tutor fees, rent of the hall, sports equipment and resources.
