CAPTAIN’S prize-winning golfers representi­ng fifteen of the county’s sixteen clubs converged on Castlegreg­ory on Saturday last to compete for the coveted The Kerryman Captain’s Challenge which had been postponed from the previous weekend because of the weather and the magnificen­t nine-hole links was in magnificen­t condition for the event which began with a 10.30am Shotgun start.

Castleisla­nd’s Julianne Browne (19) took the Ladies Prize with an excellent 38 points to win by three from Killarney’s Noreen O’Callaghan (18) who had 35 with Tina Moriarty (19) from the host club in third place with 33 points.

The Men’s event went to Tralee’s Verners Tess (4) who shot a magnificen­t 39 points, representi­ng a round of just one over par, to win comfortabl­y by six shots from Kenmare’s Paul O’Connor (12) who had 33 points with Castleisla­nd’s Liam McCarthy (12) in third place also with 33 points while the Guest Prize went to Hon Sec of the Castlegreg­ory Men’s Club Pat Mulcahy.

The Kerryman Sports Editor Paul Brennan who presented the prize to the winners at the dinner in Tomásins Restaurant at nearby Stradbally, welcomed and thanked all the players and guests for their attendance, especially former Kerryman employee and current Tralee President Des Fitzgerald who was one of the founders of this event back in the early 1990s.
