The Kerryman (South Kerry Edition)
Brilliant comeback from Listry
LISTRY staged a tremendous fightback in the final quarter to come from six points down to edge out Castlegregory in an exciting curtain-raiser in Austin Stack Park on Sunday last.
With Alan Fitzgerald pulling the strings at midfield Castlegregory had taken the game to the favourites and were well worth their 2-8 to 0-5 interval lead. Their forward play was very impressive with Brandon Hoare and Anton Kelliher causing lots of problems for the opposition, but Listry received a boost soon after the restart when Joe Clifford capitalised on a defensive mistake to slam a loose ball to the net.
Whether by design or not, Castlegregory were playing a lot more conservatively than was the case in the opening period but still they held a six points gap until Joe Clifford made the most from another defensive mishap to boot home a second goal with ten to go.
There were still two points between the sides, but Listry now had the scent of victory and good scores from Ronan Buckley and Gary O’Sullivan levelled it before Buckley coolly sent over a ‘45 in the final minute of normal time to clinch victory on a score of 2-12 to 2-11.
County Chairman Tim Murphy presented the Con Brosnan Cup to winning captain Jimmy O’Leary and Neilly Shanahan presented the Castleisland Mart Man of the Match to Listry’s Joe Clifford.
